This is the first avatar
(incarnation) of Lord Vishnu in which he incarnated as human. This is also
known as the dwarf avatar. Before I tell you story about this, there is one

so, let’s begin the story of Vamana Avatar.
Last time, we read a story of
Prahlad and how Lord Vishnu took Narsimha Avatar to save him and kill
Hiranyakasipu. After Prahlad, his son Virechana became the king and he is
followed by Mahabali who was a great ruler and people loved him. The people
were happy and he was taught Vedas by his grandfather Prahlad. But after
Shukracharya became his guru. Due to Indra had elixir during the churning of
the sea (remembered the story told you before), he was so powerful and he
killed Mahabali. Shukracharya brought him back to the life as he knew Sanjivani
power, by which, he can bring back to life to the person whose neck is not cut.
Afterwards, Mahabali prayed a lot
to Lord Brahma and asked for the boon and he asked, “Most people are afraid of
demons and I want to show the world that we are also good people and for that,
I need a power equal to Indra so, we are not defeated by Indra, the king of heaven.”
So, Lord Brahma gave him this boon because he felt he was a righteous person.
Shukracharya was very intelligent and good at strategy and with his help,
Mahabali won all the three worlds and conquered them with heaven. Shukracharya
told him to do 100 Yagna to become king of the heaven. Mahabali respected his
guru and started the preparation for Yagna.
Meanwhile, Indra felt dejected
because he not only defeated by Mahabali, but also he made the perfect
governance on all. He was actually worried and went to his mother Aditi. His
mother saw him and asked the matter. He explained his mother and his mother
promised him to solve it out. She did a penance to Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu
appeared in front of her and asked her for a boon. She asked Mahabali has taken
my son’s kingdom and I want it back. Lord Vishnu explained that Mahabali was a
good king and he deserved to be second Indra. But she said, “Do you think the
rest demons also deserve?” So, she asked Lord Vishnu to take birth from her and
end the kingdom of Mahabali. He granted her wish and soon after he was born
from her as a dwarf, very intelligent boy.
Meanwhile, Mahabali had completed
99 Yagna for becoming king and he was about to do 100th Yagna. When
he was about to start, this Lord Vishnu as a dwarf Brahmin went there and asked
for some alms. Mahabali bowed this child and said that today I am going to do
100th yagna so, I will fulfill wish of everybody. But Shukracharya interrupted
him and told him that this child is none else but Lord Vishnu and he came here
on behalf of Indra and everything will be lost if you give him promise for
alms. He only heard half of it and said that if my Lord has come then I will
fulfill all of his wishes. Shukracharya got angry and cursed him, “You
disobeyed me so you will lose your entire splendor.” Still he was ready to give
everything asked by this child and he remained unafraid. He asked the dwarf
child, “What do you want?” Lord Vishnu in the appearance of a child asked for 3
steps of land for his Yagna. Mahabali has not expected this so, he told the
child to ask everything so, in future, you won’t have to ask anything from anybody.
But still, Lord Vishnu said, “I
want only 3 steps land measured by my feet. If a person cannot satisfy by the 3
steps of land, he can never be satisfied with anything.” Mahabali felt
everything is magical and he was starring at the boy with magnetically. He said
he would give. So, Lord Vishnu increased his size and became such a big that in
first foot, he took the whole earth. In the second foot, he took whole heaven.
Now, he told Mahabali, your promise was broken as he couldn’t take the third
step. Mahabali said, “I am not going to break the promise. You can take the
third step on my head.” He took the third step, but because of the force
Mahabali went to the underground. Lord Vishnu said to him, “You are my true
devotee. Even Shukracharya warned you, still you gave me this promise and kept
it. Ask for a boon.” Mahabali asked that you will be in front of me for day and
night so I can worship you. Lord Vishnu granted this.
When Mahabali was making and redesigning
his kingdom, he found one black man. He wanted to be his gatekeeper. Now here
in Vaikunth, at the place of Lord Vishnu, his wife goddess Laxmi missed him.
So, she also came to Mahabali. She said, “My husband has gone for work and I
can’t live without him. Please protect me.” Mahabali said, “You are my sister
and from today, I will protect you.” From that day, they all have prosperity in
the underground world. Once she was praying there and Mahabali heard and asked,
“Whom are praying for?” She said, “For you.” He got happy and told her to ask
anything from him. She said, “I want my husband back.” He was puzzled and
asked, “Who is your husband?” She said, “That gatekeeper.” Both disappeared and
Mahabali asked for forgiveness after realizing this. Lord Vishnu gave him boon
that he will make him another Indra after Indra’s kingdom.
This is how Rakshabandhan is
celebrated in India. Every woman ties Rakhi (sacred thread) on the hands of her
brother on this day. So, this was the story of Mahabali and Lord Vishnu’s
