Last time, in the Varaha incarnation we saw that 2 gatekeepers of Lord Vishnu born as Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakasipu and one of that died by Lord Vishnu as Boar incarnation. After the death of his brother, Hiranyakasipu became very evil and decided to destroy all the followers and Lord Vishnu himself. He thought that if he wanted to win from him, he needed a great boon and immortality. This immortality can only be gained by Lord Brahma. So, he took penance for years and all the angels were terrified by his will and prayed Lord Brahma.

Meanwhile, Lord Indra came to know that he was not with his men. Therefore, he thought to destroy all demons and they could never attack back in future so, he attacked them with all angels. As Lord Indra expected, all the demons were defeated and most demons either died or were captured. After destroying everything, Lord Indra went to the palace of Hiranyakasipu and he found his wife Kayadhu there. Lord Indra thought to take her as a prisoner so, in future, he could use her against Hiranyakasipu. So, he was forcibly taking her to Amaravati, capital of Lord Indra in heaven, sage Narada appeared. He is the sage who can move to all the heavens, earth and underground and be a messenger for different people.

He said, “Indra Stop! What are you doing? You will get a sin for fighting with a lady who didn’t raise any weapons and you are hurting her.” Lord Indra told him that Hiranyakasipu was not there so he destroyed whole city and now taking her because in future, he could use her as hostage against him. Sage Narada said, “Taking her in a prison is the great sin as she has not harmed you and she is pure and innocent.” Lord Indra thought on this and realized this ordered his men to leave her and left. Sage Narada helped the trembling Kayadhu and asked her, “My daughter, are you alright?” She looked at him and took a deep breath and bowed him and told that if Lord Indra had took me there, I would have killed myself because Hiranyakasipu is the only man I have loved in my life.

Sage Narada helped her and calmed her and he said that he knew already that she was carrying a child and this was not good for any of them. He asked her, “What will you do now?” She looked around all the death and devastation and thought that if she stayed there, maybe someone else or Lord Indra would come. So, he asked sage Narada, “I have a request for you. I will look after you as I am your own daughter. Would you please take me to your hermitage if it is ok with you? Narada smiled and said yes as his purpose of coming there was to take her to home. He took her to his home and she looked after sage Narada well and he intelligently said her lots of stories of Lord Vishnu.

Hearing all the stories of Lord Vishnu, she developed an attachment towards Lord Vishnu. Additionally, the unborn baby in her womb also heard these stories and loved Lord Vishnu. Time has passed.

Now on the other side, Brahma got pleased with Hiranyakasipu because his penance got too powerful and because of that air, all the heavens started burning up. So, Lord Brahma went to the earth to meet Hiranyakasipu. He was so much in deep penance that he didn’t realized that Lord has come and after Lord Brahma touched him, he bowed him. Lord Brahma was pleased with his penance so he asked him to wish for a boon. He asked, “I wish to be immortal”, but Lord Brahma stopped in between and told him, “that is not possible because everyone who is born has to die. I cannot change the laws of nature.”

Hiranyakasipu thought to ask for something which makes impossible for him to die. He continued, “Lord, I wish that I cannot be killed by any man or God or animal or any other creature which is created by you. Nobody can kill me during day or night, in earth or in heavens, either inside or outside of the house, not with any weapons.” When Lord Brahma heard this he got silent as he has to grant this and he had no choice. So, he told Lord Vishnu, “I think you will need to take care of this.” And then he grated Hiranyakasipu’s wish. Afterwards, Lord vanished and Hiranyakasipu joyously went home. He hurt to see all the devastation happened in his state. He got too angry and went to heaven to take the revenge.

All the angels had to leave the heavens and he found his wife Kayadhu there and took her back to the palace. Despite she asked to change his ways and stop all the attacks and all, he continued. It was a time when none able to raise a voice against him and Kayadhu gave a birth to Prahlad. As he was there with Narada, he became too different than his father. As he started growing up, he continued to pray Lord Vishnu and his firm, kind and gentle gesture created problems for Hiranyakasipu as people started loving Prahlad for his worships. Hiranyakasipu wanted him to be worshipped as God above of Lord Vishnu. He went to Prahlad and tried to talk. But he was shunned by the reply he got. Prahlad said, “I have learnt that Lord Vishnu who is the ruler of the three worlds, if you devoted him, he will be always there for us.” He got angry on him and went to the teacher. The teacher was terrified with Hiranyakasipu and he said that he did not teach a single thing from this. He told him about how he learned about Lord Vishnu. At school, he said the same story to everyone.

Hiranyakasipu got angry and went to Prahlad to ask about how he learned this. Prahlad replied, “It is the truth which I found everywhere. In every single leaf and everywhere.” Hiranyakasipu got angry and he ordered to kill his son and the guard looked at him with anxiety. They took him and tried to kill with the sword, but the blade did not go through his body. Then they tried to throw him from the mountain, but again he was back and saved. They threw him in the snake well, but he came back without any problem. They tried mad elephants, but everything becomes alright wherever he went. After tired of everything, Hiranyakasipu called his sister Holika and asked her for the help. She had the boon that the fire cannot burn her. She made sit him in her lap and set the fire. However, Hiranyakasipu could not calculate the power of devotion and she started burning in the fire whereas Prahlad was fine. In Hindu, Holi is burnt every year as part of this to burn all the sins and second day, people play with colors to celebrate this.

Now, Hiranyakasipu was afraid and he catched Prahlad and asked, “I am going to kill you myself and I would see from where Lord Vishnu is coming to save you.” He asked Prahlad, “show me where is Lord Vishnu?” Prahlad pointed towards one pillar and Hiranyakasipu got shunned as the pillar shatter and from the pillar some ferocious figure came out. Hiranyakasipu stepped back and asked, “who are you in the face of lion and body of a man?” That figure said loudly, “I am Narsimha, one incarnation of Lord Vishnu and I have come to kill you.” They both started fighting. Lord Vishnu dragged him near the threshold of the door (neither inside nor outside) and he placed him on his lap (neither earth not heaven) and then killed him with his claws (no weapon) at twilight (neither day nor night). After killing him, he roared loudly and sat on the throne. All the demons escaped and even angels were also afraid to see this figure.

Only Prahlad was standing there and said, “Thank you My Lord, you came to protect me. I knew you would come.” He asked Prahlad to grant a boon. Prahlad asked peace for his father. Looking at the little Prahlad, he smiled and said, “don’t worry for your father. He will attain his place back after 3 births. He has born like this because of a curse.” Afterwards, Prahlad became the ruler and he left all bad practices and created heaven on the earth.
